“Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8
Reflection
Every year on All Saints Day, as the Beatitudes are proclaimed, my eyes inevitably wander from the organ console to the assembly and ministers in front of me. We often imagine the communion of saints as radiant figures in stained glass windows, untroubled and luminous. But Jesus spoke the Beatitudes to everyday people sitting on a dusty hillside—people carrying grief, hungering for justice, striving for peace, and longing for mercy.
In our music ministry, we see that very same tapestry of humanity each week. We see the choir member who just lost a spouse, singing through tears. We see the cantor who rushed from a grueling hospital shift, offering whatever voice and energy they have left. And we see the faithful in the pews whose quiet, persevering prayers sustain our parishes. The Beatitudes remind us that holiness is not about flawless execution or unblemished perfection. It is found in humble, steadfast faithfulness. When we gather our communities in song, our task is not to put on a polished performance, but to give voice to this pilgrim people—the living saints in our midst who, in their meekness and hunger, reflect the face of Christ.
Prayer
God of all the saints, you call the humble,
the sorrowful, and the peacemakers to your kingdom.
Strengthen us as we lead your people in song and prayer.
Purify our hearts, that through our ministry we may mirror your love
and one day join the eternal chorus of heaven.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
