Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 25, 2026
“The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” – Matthew 22:40
Reflection
We have heard the accounts of Jesus with the Pharisees and Sadducees so often that we might forget that these scenes emerged from divisiveness and factionalism in first-century Judaism. (Things we still encounter in our lives and ministries.) Jesus is given a “purity test” today, and he does what he often does: he doesn’t dismiss those asking the question (though, in fairness, other times he does!) but rather answers the test by going back to a First Principle of faith. Today’s commandment reminder might be the “firstiest” of First Principles!
However . . . the Exodus reading also reminds us that God is not only concerned with divisiveness or factionalism within our own faith tradition or community, but also within the broader realms of nation and society. God’s prophets, Jesus included, consistently showed themselves concerned with these same things, often exalting those who were considered “other” or outsider, and scandalously proclaiming them to be among God’s chosen, too.
Our world and Church today present us with many opportunities to be followers of Jesus, as we broaden our embrace, our inclusion, our care, our support. Come, Holy Spirit, our Advocate; make us advocates in your name.
Prayer
O Christian, God decrees it now:
Oppress no stranger in your land;
Their cry is heard from heaven’s height,
When you defy the Lord’s command.
Christ calls us now to love of God
with all our heart and mind and soul;
and as ourselves, love neighbor too—
the law fulfilled, one sacred goal.
