Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 18, 2026
“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God” – Matthew 22:21
Reflection
I love the themes in this week’s readings.
The prophet Isaiah describes the gifts God has bestowed upon his chosen one. The Psalmist proclaims, “Give the Lord glory and honor!” Paul tells the Thessalonians of his prayers for them as they work and labor for the Lord. In the Gospel, Christ instructs the Pharisees to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.
In these readings, I am reminded of the flow of grace from giftedness to gratitude, from gratitude to generosity. All people are gifted with unique strengths bestowed upon us by God. As church musicians, these gifts are on display daily, and there are certainly a myriad of other God-given talents and skills we bring to our communities.
With the recognition of the blessing of these gifts, gratitude is the natural response. We look at all we have been given and marvel in the abundance granted to us. Our hearts yearn to “Give God glory and honor.”
Finally, from gratitude, sprouts generosity. Our grateful hearts simply must share the gifts we have been given, to give to God what belongs to God. Some of us might be inspired to share material goods, but this generosity can be in the form of sharing our talents as well and in spreading God’s love and mercy. Can we give the gift of patience? A listening ear? In our abundance, how else can we give to God what belongs to God?
Prayer
Gracious and loving God,
We thank you for the abundance in our lives and for our unique talents.
May we forever praise you with grateful hearts.
Help us to show our love for you as we share the gifts we have been given
and as we strive to be your presence among your people.
Amen.
