Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 4, 2026
“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” – Philippians 4:6
Reflection
The Lectionary takes us on a wild ride today. In Isaiah, the vineyard is totally destroyed. In Matthew, two groups of servants and the heir are murdered. But Psalm 80 reminds us to call upon God and Philippians sums up why: no anxiety at all.
The reminder here is that God is God and we are not. We have free will and we make choices, but the power of discernment about those choices is governed by the Spirit’s grace. The vengeful tenants acted out of their desire for wealth and power. Their motivation was self-serving. We must operate from a different model. We go to God in complete confidence that God’s will guides us where we need to go, even when it is not where we want to go or timed for when we want it to happen.
I need this message today. My pastor/boss/friend is retiring. Will I lose my job? Will my faith community get a good pastor? Will the parish change dramatically? Whatever the struggles of transition, there is a purpose. My prayer for all of us is that we be fed by God’s Word and the Eucharistic Banquet to trust that God’s plan will be done.
Prayer
Loving God, who is the source of all that is good,
help me to be open to your wisdom and guide my actions
so that all that I do may be a living witness to your presence. Amen.
