Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 27, 2026
“'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards changed his mind and went.” – Matthew 21:28-29
Reflection “I’m done. I don’t deserve this,” I muttered to myself on the drive home from church one day. Thankfully, I no longer remember the supposed offense. But I do remember hearing the uninvited voice of the Holy Spirit responding, “Says who? What if I think you do deserve this? What if this is part of my plan for you?” Perhaps I needed to truly follow Christ who “emptied himself…, humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death.”
Maybe others have been there as well--a rude parishioner, choir members who don’t listen, and emails or letters of complaint about our service in music ministry might all contribute to a petulant desire to say “I will not” to our Lord’s mission to bring our talents into his vineyard.
The vineyards in this part of my state are beautiful and look idyllic to passersby. The small vineyard in my childhood backyard, however, was hot and filled with buzzing, pesky, biting insects. We stood in a mess of sticky, squashed grapes as we cut the bunches above our heads. Our parish vineyards are the same. We may find ourselves hot, tired, irritated, and messy while laboring in God’s vineyard. We may think we deserve more cooperative, respectful treatment, or a more musically idyllic vineyard. But our Lord doesn’t ask us what we think we deserve. He asks us to empty and humble ourselves, and to be obedient. Our loving Father asks us every morning, “My son/daughter, go out and work in the vineyard today.”
Prayer Lord God, please help us to serve you and your people beyond our wants and emotions. Help us to grow in obedience and love, to be witnesses of your humility and generosity. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
